The Mississippi Blues Trail for Trumpet Records stands outside Trumpet Records’ former building at 309 North Farish Street. Jackson, Mississippi.
The GPS location of this marker is: N 32° 18.211′ W 90° 11.318′
This Mississippi Blues Trail marker reads:
“TRUMPET RECORDS – Trumpet Records was the first record company in Mississippi to achieve national stature through its distribution, sales, radio airplay and promotion. Willard and Lillian McMurry launched the label from their retail store, the Record Mart, here at 309 North Farish Street, in 1950, and later converted the back room into a recording studio. The first releases by Mississippi blues legends Sonny Boy Williamson No. 2, Elmore James, and Willie Love appeared on Trumpet in 1951.”
Unfortunately the former Trumpet Records headquarters building has been allowed to deteriorate severely, as has the rest of this section of North Farish Street. The City of Jackson currently has a project to rehabilitate the area, a very worthwhile project given the significance of North Farish street in music history.
